The Chamber voted Thursday to censor the Democrat to Green for his outbreak in the speech of President Donald Trump to Congress on Tuesday night.
The effort led by the Republicans approved 224-198 with two members voting present, one of them is green. Ten Democrats voted to censor Green.
The Texas Democrat was immediately called to the well for a public reading of the resolution of the speaker Mike Johnson. Green and other Democrats around him there began to sing the anthem of civil rights “We we overcom”, which led to the Republican side to shout “order.”
A shouting party between the Democrats of the House of Representatives and the Republicans exploded. At one point, Democratic representative Ayanna Pressley shouted: “What a shame!” Democratic representative Rashida Tlaib also shouted the Republicans.
In a brief appearance in Fox News after the vote, Johnson described him as “a really sad day for our institution.”
The representative Andy Ogles, a hard line member of the Freedom of the Chamber, published in X that he is already writing a resolution to eliminate each of the Democrats who manifested together with Green of their committees.

Green spoke on the floor of the house hours after being censored. He read the resolution aloud and offered his own comment.
“Mr. President and I still get up,” said Green, “and still lifted a proud and freed democrat, not done, without fear and without fear.”
Green continued to criticize Trump’s agenda and explained animatedly why he and other Democrats sang in the well, describing him as “acivility.”
“We don’t have to allow [Trump’s] Incivility, its loyalty requirement, to prevent us from taking the necessary actions to protect freedom and justice for all, to protect people’s government, for people, for people … We have to do what is necessary. I think we have to participate in a level of positive and fair incivility. “
The resolution of censorship was presented by the representative Dan Newhouse, who described Green’s behavior as “unacceptable.” The Democrats tried and failed on Wednesday night block the measure.
A censorship resolution is a formal reprimand of the Chamber for violations of the Chamber Code of Conduct. A vote to censor a chamber member has no power beyond a public conviction of the behavior of the member and does not deny the privileges of the members.
Censoring the members of the house has been historically rare, but in recent years we have seen members of both political parties use this as a political tool. Green is the fifth member of Congress to be censored in this decade.
Some camera republicans are floating more punitive measures against green. The Caucus of the House of Representatives said that its members plan to try to strip the tasks of their committee next week.
Green is not the only legislator who interrupts a presidential speech to Congress. In 2022, republican representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Bobert repeatedly interrupted the speech of then President Joe Biden. Greene did it again during the state of the state of the biden 2024 union.

On Thursday, Ten Democrats Supported the Censure Resolution: Reps. AMI Bera of California, Ed Case of Hawaii, Jim Costa of California, Laura Gillen of New York, Jim Himes of Connecticut, Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, Jared Moskowitz of Florid York
But many Democrats criticized the resolution.
“That vote of censorship was outrageous for my mind,” said Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin to ABC News about Green’s vote. “What they have done is that they have completely diluted the meaning of censorship. Censor people for a dike. Of course, we will now have to start censoring Marjorie Taylor Greene, she repeatedly gave President Biden.”
“We know we have seen Marjorie [Taylor Greene] Shout Joe Biden. There was no outrage. None. Therefore, there should be no outrage today, “said Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett at ABC News Live.
When asked about the 10 Democrats who supported censorship, Crockett said: “I don’t know their reason or rational, but I know I voted as I did and at the end of the day if my district decides to go because I voted that way, so that so. But I am with the Green.”

The representative Al Green is eliminated from the Chamber when President Donald Trump addresses a joint session of Congress in the Capitol in Washington, on March 4, 2025.

Moments before the vote, Johnson had told ABC News that he had no pleasure in making history like this “and expected Green to” recognize his mistake. “
“I want us to have an adequate decorum. I want us to really maintain the great tradition of this institution,” said Johnson. “And these things are damaged and regret that has happened.”
Green was expelled from the joint session on Tuesday after interrupting the president’s speech and refusing to sit down despite Johnson’s warnings. Green said several times that he was not upset with Johnson to eliminate him or supervise the vote of censorship.
“He chose to deliberately violate the rules of the house of the house in a way that we believe that it probably does not be preceded in history, interrupting a message from a president of the United States, who is an honored guest,” Johnson explained before the vote.
