Trump has entangled, and falsely, framed his Ukrainian counterpart as an illegitimate and Ukraine leader as the instigator of the Russian war. Ukrainian and European leaders have expressed concern about what they see as an alignment of the United States with the Russian narratives about the war from Trump’s return to the White House.

Ukrainian and American officials will meet in Saudi Arabia next week for discussions about the end of war. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will direct the United States delegation.

On Friday, Trump told journalists that “we are doing very well with Russia,” that according to him it was “bombarding Ukraine.”

When asked if he felt that Putin was exploiting the freezing of the United States in assistance in his intensified attacks against Ukraine, Trump added: “I actually believe that he is doing what anyone else would do … I think he wants him to stop and resolve.”

The president also again framed Ukraine as the main impediment of peace. “I find it more difficult, frankly, deal with Ukraine. And they don’t have the cards,” Trump said. “In terms of obtaining a final agreement, it may be easier to deal with Russia.”
